The sculptures ‘Black Heart’ take inspiration from funerary objects. They relate to heart-shaped amulets buried with the mummified dead in ancient Egypt. Egyptians believed the heart to have been the repository of intelligence and consciousness, and heart-shaped amulets were thought to assist the dead in their afterlife.
