Uncertain Times
Mapping a transformation
Istanbul Biennial
Mapping a transformation is the first installation to emerge from Uncertain Times, a project investigating the histories of the Middle East at the end of the Ottoman Empire. (1913–1920). For Istanbul, Joreige reinvents a historical frieze, assembling archival material ‑ personal diaries, letters, photographs and documents – with her own drawings and texts. From chronicles under Ottoman regime, to accounts on the circulation of grain and the famine, and stories on the rise of Arab nationalist movements, and the fate of Palestine and Greater Lebanon; her presentation unfolds the hopes and anxieties of a period of turmoil and transition, the consequences of which still reverberate in the region today.
